A sad reality we face is that school isn’t always the safest place for our kids to be. In 2018 alone, there were 82 school shooting incidents in the United States. That is the highest number of shootings in one year since 1970. Sadly, 2018 was also the highest year for the number of victims killed, including the shooter: 51 total people dying in a school shooting incident. In the wake of 2018’s shooting in Parkland, Florida, the nation is grappling with how to handle gun reform in the country.
Putting politics aside, three teens from Indiana thought about how they could help if reforming laws was going to take a long time. These thoughts led them to invent a one-of a kind backpack that’s designed to keep students protected in the event of a school shooting incident. Their “Lyfe” backpack inspired the students to join the Innovate WithIN contest, and they won first place. Each of them received $10,000 and scholarships for the invention. This video from Entertainment Tonight shows these young inventors.
