One Indianapolis family is giving thanks for their  miracle baby , who defied all the odds in his fight to survive.

WXIN  reports that Daniel Breyts and Jess Novac welcomed their baby boy, Rowan, in 2018. The little boy had a rough start, as he was born three months early and weighing just over a pound. Due to his extremely premature birth, he wasn’t expected to live. In fact, doctors in Illinois told Daniel and Jess that Rowan had a less than 1% chance and even advised them to begin planning for his funeral.

“It was a really hard balance between — I wanted him to survive, but I was a realistic person. They told me he was going to die. I didn’t want him to be in any pain and drag it out at that point,” Jess told WXIN.

For two months, Daniel and Jess waited to see what would happen as Rowan suffered from necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a disease which attacks the intestines. Eventually, they opted to go to Riley Hospital for Children to see if anything else could be done for their baby. Miraculously, those doctors believed they could help Rowan.

“She told me they saw a lot of pink viable intestine, which was the exact opposite of what we had been told,” Daniel explained.

Rowan was taken into surgery just four days after Riley Hospital accepted his case. Following a 209-day stay in Riley Hospital’s NICU, he was able to go home for the first time ever.

Today, Rowan is growing and thriving. This little boy certainly is a fighter!
